Sand dunes with snowfields and Karakoram peaks behind them. 30km from Skardu. Ride in the afternoon light when the dune faces are golden.
Sarfaranga is a cold desert: sand dunes at 2,500m altitude, permanent snowfields on the peaks above, the Shigar River running alongside the dune field, and the Karakoram walls rising on both sides. It is one of the world's few places where you can stand on a sand dune with snow-capped mountains directly behind you. This combination is the defining image of Baltistan.
ATV riding gives you the terrain rather than just the view. You cover ground across the dune face, along the river flats, and into the quieter eastern sections of the desert that day visitors on foot rarely reach. The landscape from inside a moving vehicle at dusk is different from the roadside.
Sarfaranga is one of the world's few cold deserts: sand dunes at 2,500m altitude, with permanent snowfields visible on the peaks above them and the Shigar River running alongside. The sand is a pale, warm colour. The combination of dunes, river, and high snowy peaks in the same frame is the landscape most associated with Baltistan photography. ATV riding adds a dimension of movement to the landscape.
No prior ATV experience is required. The vendor provides a 10 to 15 minute orientation before you ride: throttle, brakes, turning, and how to handle the dune terrain. The dunes are wide and open, there are no obstacles, cliffs, or technical features. Beginners consistently manage well. Children must be 12+ and can ride pillion with an adult for safety.
Sessions run 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes. A 30-minute session covers the main dune field and is enough for a single run and photography stops. 60 minutes lets you explore the riverside section of the desert and ride the full dune face multiple times. 90 minutes is for those who want to push further east into the less-visited sections. Raahi recommends 60 minutes for most visitors.
Late afternoon is the best combination of rideable temperatures and photography light, the dunes are sidelit from around 3pm onward, which makes the sand texture and ripple patterns visible. The golden hour at Sarfaranga (roughly 5:30 to 7pm in summer) is exceptional: warm dune colour against cool blue snowfields. Morning rides avoid afternoon heat in July to August but have flat, less dramatic light.
Approximately 30km east of Skardu, about 40 to 45 minutes by vehicle on the Shigar Road. The desert is in the Shigar Valley and is commonly visited as a half-day trip from Skardu, often combined with a stop at Shigar Fort Palace (another 10km beyond the desert) or the Manthal Rock Buddha on the way back. Raahi includes transport in the ATV booking.
ATV sessions at Sarfaranga cost approximately PKR 2,500 to 4,000 for 30 minutes and PKR 4,000 to 7,000 for 60 minutes (per ATV, which seats 1 to 2 people). Exact pricing changes seasonally with vendors. Raahi confirms current pricing when you book. Transport from Skardu to the desert and back is included in Raahi's coordination.
Tell us your group size, dates, and preferred session length. We'll sort the vendor, schedule the late-afternoon slot, and combine it with Shigar Fort or Manthal if you want a full day out of Skardu.
