Booking.com and similar platforms have patchy coverage of Skardu's better properties. The hotels that list on aggregator platforms are often those that depend on them: not the boutique properties that fill through word of mouth and direct relationships.
The Shigar Fort Palace, some of the best guesthouses in Khaplu, and several properties in Skardu with genuine mountain views either aren't on Booking.com or have better rates and room selection when booked directly.
Mubarik has stayed in or personally inspected every property we recommend. If he wouldn't book it for his own family, we don't put it in a Raahi itinerary. This is a small list maintained by hand, not a catalog.
Where We Book
The main base for most Baltistan trips. We select properties with mountain views, clean facilities, and reliable staff: properties where the owners care. The room inventory in peak season is genuinely limited, so early booking matters.
The Shigar Fort Palace (now a heritage hotel managed by the Aga Khan Trust) is one of the finest stays in all of Pakistan: a restored 400-year-old fort with elegant rooms and a famous garden. We also know the smaller properties in the valley that deliver character without the palace price.
Khaplu has the Khaplu Palace (another Aga Khan restoration) as its headline property: one of Pakistan's most underrated stays. The wider Khaplu Valley, including the Hushe River confluence, has smaller properties for guests who want fewer tourists and more space.
Karimabad, the main Hunza town, has a range of hotels with views directly toward Rakaposhi (7,788m) and Ultar Sar (7,388m). We select properties where the views are genuine from the rooms, not just marketing photographs.
Common Questions
Do you need to book hotels in Skardu in advance?
Yes, and this applies across all seasons, not just peak. The better properties in Skardu, Shigar, and Khaplu have limited rooms and fill up early. The policy is the same across all hotels we work with: a booking is only confirmed after full payment. Until payment is made, your spot can be taken by anyone else at any time. We can always check availability for you, recommend the right properties for your dates, and handle the booking and payment process.
What is the Shigar Fort Palace like to stay in?
A 400-year-old fort restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, with elegantly furnished rooms, a historic courtyard garden, and Shigar Valley on all sides. Fewer than 20 rooms, so it never feels crowded. The price is higher than almost anything else in the region, but it is the right choice for a special occasion or if heritage architecture matters to you. 30 minutes from Skardu by road.
Is the Khaplu Palace worth it?
It is a strong option, and there are several other good properties in Khaplu Valley worth considering too. Another Aga Khan restoration, set in a quieter atmosphere than Skardu city. It is also close to the starting points for Hushe Valley treks. If your itinerary reaches Khaplu, we can share what is available and what suits your group best. Keep in mind it is about two hours from Skardu, so it works better as a dedicated overnight leg than a quick detour.
What is the best area to stay: Skardu, Shigar, or Khaplu?
Depends on your itinerary. Skardu city is the right base for most trips: central for Deosai Plains, Satpara Lake, and the Indus Valley. Shigar is 30 minutes away and works as a day trip or a one-night stay. Khaplu is two hours from Skardu and makes more sense as a dedicated leg. If you have 5 days or more in Baltistan, a night in both Shigar and Khaplu is worth building in. We can suggest the right properties for each stop based on your dates and group.
Do you handle hotel bookings without a full tour package?
Yes. If you have your itinerary planned and just need the right properties and direct bookings, we can handle that as a standalone service. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, group size, and destinations. We will tell you what is available, what we recommend, and what to expect from each property.
How far is Shigar from Skardu?
Approximately 30 kilometres, typically 30 to 40 minutes by road. The route follows the Indus River valley and is paved for most of the drive. Shigar works as a half-day trip, a full day, or an overnight. The Fort Palace makes a strong case for at least one night.
What hotels are available in Hunza with views of Rakaposhi?
Karimabad is the main town in Hunza and has several good hotels with views of Rakaposhi (7,788m) and Ultar Sar (7,388m). There are heritage properties, mid-range guesthouses, and smaller boutique options available. We only recommend properties where the mountain views are genuine from the rooms, not just from the rooftop. Message us with your dates and we will share what suits your group.
