What Is Deosai?
Deosai, meaning "giant" in Shina, is a high-altitude plateau stretching across approximately 3,000 square kilometres at an average elevation of 4,114 metres. It is one of the world's highest plateaus and one of Pakistan's most extraordinary landscapes.
In summer, from June to August, Deosai is a carpet of wildflowers: hundreds of species of alpine plants in bloom simultaneously, their colours even more vivid against the surrounding white peaks. Rivers cut through the grassland without warning. Streams appear from nowhere. The light at this altitude is unlike anything at sea level.
The plateau is a national park and a UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site. It protects one of the last significant populations of the Himalayan brown bear: a subspecies that was nearly hunted to extinction by the 1990s and is now recovering under park protection. Sightings are common from the road.
At night, with no artificial light for 50 kilometres in any direction and the atmosphere at its thinnest, Deosai has some of the finest stargazing in South Asia. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, in a sky that makes urban stargazers question everything they thought they knew about the night.
Highlights
Deosai has one of Pakistan's last viable brown bear populations. Park rangers know the best viewing areas. Sightings from the road (not on foot) are regular in the mornings and evenings. Raahi drivers know where to look.
At 4,142m, Sheosar is one of the world's highest lakes. The water is cold, clear, and still. In early morning, the surrounding peaks reflect perfectly in its surface. Often there is no one else here.
The window when Deosai's plateau is in full bloom is approximately 10 weeks: late June through August. Walking through fields of alpine flowers at altitude, with the Karakoram peaks in the background, is the experience that makes Deosai genuinely unforgettable.
Deosai is one of the darkest places in South Asia. Some guests who camp overnight specifically come for the night sky. If you're not camping, even a post-sunset drive through the plateau before returning to Skardu offers something extraordinary.
How to Visit
From Skardu: The standard approach is from Skardu via Satpara Lake, climbing to the plateau through a dramatic glacial valley. The drive to the plateau edge takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Most guests do Deosai as a full-day excursion from Skardu.
Season: The road to Deosai is snowbound from October to May or June, depending on the year. The only viable window for a Deosai visit is June through September. We recommend July to August for the wildflower peak.
Vehicle: A proper 4x4 is essential. The plateau access road is rough, unpaved, and subject to flooding. Raahi uses Land Cruiser Prado as standard for Deosai routes.
Overnight: Camping on Deosai is permitted with park permission. Some guests arrange an overnight specifically for the night sky. Raahi can organise this: contact us to discuss.
Common Questions
Deosai is accessible from mid-June to early October, depending on snowfall. The road over the plateau from Skardu opens when the snow clears, typically by mid-June. July and August are the peak months for wildflowers and brown bear sightings. The road closes with the first heavy snowfall in autumn, usually in October.
Yes. Deosai is one of the most reliable places in Pakistan to see Himalayan brown bears. Sightings are most frequent in July and August near Sheosar Lake and along the plateau road. Viewing is always from vehicles: the bears are habituated to cars at a distance but should not be approached on foot. Most day visits in peak season result in at least one sighting.
Deosai Plains average 4,114m (13,497 feet) above sea level, making it the world's second-highest plateau after the Tibetan Plateau. The elevation makes altitude awareness important, especially for travellers who have only recently arrived from lower elevations. Spending a night in Skardu (2,400m) before visiting Deosai is advisable.
Yes. There are basic rest houses inside the park near Sheosar Lake. Camping on the plateau is also possible with the right equipment. Overnight stays on Deosai are one of the most memorable experiences in Baltistan: the stars at 4,100m with no light pollution are exceptional. Raahi can arrange overnight logistics including bedding, food, and safety preparation for altitude.
