July is the peak of the Skardu season. Everything is open, the Deosai plateau is in full wildflower bloom, the weather in the valley is warm and reliable, and the flights from Islamabad are running at their most consistent of the year. It is also the busiest month, which changes some experiences but does not diminish the core of what makes Skardu worth visiting.
The weather in July

Deosai in July: the main reason to be here this month
Deosai National Park in July is one of the most extraordinary landscapes you can walk through in South Asia. The plateau, 3,000 square kilometres at 4,114 metres, is carpeted in wildflowers: yellow, white, purple, and red across the rolling grassland, with the Karakoram peaks on the horizon and Sheosar Lake reflecting the sky. This peak bloom lasts through July and into early August.
Himalayan brown bears are active on the plateau in July, feeding on the grass and flowering plants before the autumn denning season. Bear sightings are most common in the early morning along the main track from the plateau entry to Sheosar Lake. Marmots are visible throughout the day.
Deosai opens in mid-June and is reliably accessible through September. July gives you the fullest version: maximum bloom, highest bear activity, and the long summer days that allow a comfortable visit without a rushed start.
What is fully open in July
All Skardu-area attractions operate at full capacity in July. Shigar Fort Palace and its museum are open daily. Khaplu Palace is open. The Sarfaranga Cold Desert ATV operations are running. Kharpocho Fort is accessible at all hours. The Kachura Lakes are at their most accessible. There are no weather closures, no snow on secondary roads, and no restricted access points that constrain an itinerary.
The trade-off: crowds and accommodation
July is when Pakistani school holidays are in full swing, and domestic tourism to Skardu peaks. The practical effects: Shigar Fort Palace and Khaplu Palace require booking 2 to 3 weeks in advance. The main viewpoints at Kachura Lake and Kharpocho have more visitors than in shoulder season. Roads around Skardu are busier in the mornings as tour groups set out for the same destinations.
These crowds are manageable with planning. Arrive at Kharpocho Fort before 8am: the light is better and the fort is empty. Drive to Deosai with an early departure, 6am from Skardu means you reach the plateau by 8am, ahead of most groups. Stay an extra night in Khaplu to separate yourself from the day-trip circuit that runs out of Skardu. The crowds in July are nothing like what you would encounter at comparable European mountain destinations, they are worth noting, not avoiding the month over.
July for photography
The wildflower carpet on Deosai in July is the strongest photography subject of the entire GB season. The combination of alpine blooms, mountain backdrop, and Sheosar Lake makes for images that work in any light. For portraits and village photography, the harvest season is not yet here (that is September), but the agricultural valleys, Shigar, Khaplu, are in full green and the light before 7am is excellent.
