Our Story

About Raahi Retreats

How we came to build a company around slowing down.

How It Started

A Company Born From a Contradiction

Raahi Retreats exists because of a small contradiction at the heart of how most people experience Skardu.

The region is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Karakoram peaks in every direction. Valleys that feel untouched by time. Heritage forts older than most countries. But the way people usually visit it, with rushed tours, budget vans, and hotels booked by algorithms, strips away most of what makes it worth visiting in the first place.

We wanted to build something different. Not another tour operator selling the same 5-day package with a cheaper price tag. A travel company built around the opposite idea: that the point of coming to Skardu is to let it slow you down, not to check boxes on an itinerary.

The name captures both halves of that idea. Raahi means traveler. Retreats is what we want travelers to find here. The whole business is built inside that tension: motion and stillness, journey and arrival, going somewhere and truly being there once you do.

The Team

Three People, One Promise

Raahi Retreats is a partnership between three people who each bring something the others don't. None of us could build this alone. All of us believe in the same thing.

Mubarik

Co-founder, Operations & Local Expertise

Mubarik is from Skardu. Not recently relocated, but genuinely, generationally, from here. He grew up in these valleys, knows which hotels are worth the premium and which ones aren't, knows which roads close in which month, knows which drivers show up on time and which don't. The knowledge he brings is the kind that takes a lifetime to accumulate and cannot be googled.

Before Raahi Retreats, Mubarik was already running his own tour operation, quietly building trust with travelers the old-fashioned way, through delivered experiences rather than marketing. When we decided to build Raahi together, the agreement was clear from day one: his original business remains his. Raahi is something new we are creating together, not a rebrand of what he already had. That respect for what he'd already built is foundational to how we operate.

Mubarik is the reason Raahi can make promises other operators can't. When he recommends a hotel, he's stayed there. When he routes you through a specific valley, it's because he knows something about the light that time of day. That is the difference between curation and catalog.

Arqam

Co-founder, Systems & Operations

Arqam handles everything behind the scenes: the website, the automation, the financial controls, the technology that lets a small team deliver consistently premium experiences at scale. His background is in building systems, and that's exactly what Raahi needed. Someone to turn Mubarik's knowledge into a business that can grow without losing its soul.

The goal for Arqam's side of the partnership is simple: remove every piece of friction between the guest's intent to travel and the moment they arrive at their hotel with their feet up. That means fast responses, clear communication, honest pricing, no hidden fees, and no logistical surprises. The experience should feel like magic to the guest and should feel like well-oiled machinery behind the scenes.

Most tour companies grow by adding people. Raahi is growing by adding systems, so the small team can stay small and the attention to each guest can stay personal.

Aqsa

Co-founder, Client Experience

Aqsa is the voice of Raahi Retreats for every guest. When you message us on WhatsApp, when you ask a question about a package, when you need a last-minute change to your itinerary, you're talking to Aqsa.

Her role is the most important one in the company, because she's the bridge between the beautiful operation Mubarik runs on the ground and the clients who trust us with their time, their money, and their memories. Every client we've ever worked with has felt that Aqsa cares about their trip the way they do. That isn't a customer service script. It's just how she works.

If Raahi Retreats ever loses what makes it special, it'll be because we grew beyond what Aqsa can personally touch. We have no intention of letting that happen.

The Place

Why We Started Here

Skardu is the right place to build a travel company around slowness. Here's the honest reason.

Most famous travel destinations have been optimized by tourism boards, by hotel chains, by algorithms that decide which experiences show up in your search results. The optimization makes them efficient but also makes them feel the same. A honeymoon in Bali can feel remarkably like a honeymoon in the Maldives if you're not paying attention.

Skardu hasn't been optimized yet. The infrastructure is still built around what the land allows, not around what maximizes revenue per visitor. Hotels are small. Roads are slow. Flights are limited. Trying to rush through Skardu is like trying to rush through a conversation with someone who thinks before they speak. The pace will defeat you, and the experience suffers for it.

We believe that's a feature, not a bug. Skardu rewards travelers who come here ready to move at the region's pace. The ones who do leave changed. The ones who don't leave frustrated.

Raahi Retreats is for the first kind of traveler. Everything we do is calibrated for people who understand that the best trips are not the busiest ones. The way we quote. The hotels we choose. The itineraries we build. The vehicles we use. All of it built for the same kind of traveler.

We will eventually expand. Hunza is already on the map. Kashmir and beyond will follow. But we will always operate on the same principle. We go to places where the road slows down, and we help travelers who want to slow down with it.

Our Standards

What We Promise

We don't make many promises. The ones we do make, we keep.

01

Private, Always

Every trip we run is private. No strangers in your vehicle. No fixed group departures. No one else's schedule dictating yours. Your guests, your itinerary, your pace.

02

4x4 as Default

Every premium Raahi trip uses a 4x4 vehicle (Prado or above). This is non-negotiable regardless of package. The mountain roads of Baltistan deserve a vehicle built for them, and so do you.

03

Honest Pricing

Our quotes include everything we know you'll need. The total we send you is the total you pay. No hidden fees, no surprise add-ons, no extras that turn out to be required. If we forget to include something, that's our mistake to absorb, not yours.

04

Real People, Real Time

Your questions reach a real person. Your changes get handled by a real person. Your problems are solved by a real person. Aqsa is responsible for making sure every guest feels heard, and she answers messages herself. Not a chatbot, not an automated queue.

05

Local Knowledge, Not Local Marketing

Every recommendation we make comes from Mubarik's decades of personal experience in this region. We will never suggest a hotel we haven't vetted, a route we haven't driven, or an activity we wouldn't recommend to our own families. The catalog is small. The quality is real.

The Road Ahead

What's Next for Raahi

Raahi Retreats is in its first season. We are building carefully, deliberately, and in public. You are reading this page at a moment when the business is small enough that Aqsa personally answers every inquiry, Mubarik personally oversees every trip, and Arqam personally builds every system.

That will change as we grow. More travelers. More destinations. More systems. But the promises above will not change, because they are the reason we exist. If Raahi Retreats ever feels less personal, less honest, or less obsessive about quality than it does today, we will have failed at the one thing we set out to do.

If you're thinking about a trip, to Skardu, to Hunza, or to somewhere in the region we haven't announced yet, we'd love to hear from you. The first step is a short message. The next step is a conversation. After that, we build you something unforgettable.

Tell us where you want to slow down. We'll take it from there.
