The Region
Gilgit-Baltistan packs more landscape variety into a single journey than most countries manage across their entire territory. Cold deserts, alpine plateaus, turquoise lakes, heritage forts, and some of the highest peaks on earth, all within a few hours of each other.
The gateway to the Karakoram
Pakistan's highest major city. The base for K2 expeditions, Deosai Plains, Shigar Valley, cold desert landscapes, and mountain lakes that don't look real.
Rakaposhi, apricot blossoms, and Attabad Lake
One of Pakistan's most-visited valleys, and for good reason. Dramatic peaks on every horizon, a millennium-old fort, turquoise lake, and the famous hospitality of the Hunzakuts.
400 years of history, 30 minutes from Skardu
Shigar is where Baltistan's history is most visible. The restored Shigar Fort Palace is one of Pakistan's finest heritage hotels. The valley has its own pace: unhurried and genuinely beautiful.
The roof of the world
At 4,114 metres, Deosai is one of the world's highest plateaus. In summer it's carpeted in wildflowers, crossed by rivers, and home to the endangered Himalayan brown bear. There is genuinely nowhere like it.
Eastern Baltistan's hidden valley
Khaplu is Baltistan at its most unspoiled. The Khaplu Palace (Aga Khan restoration) is as impressive as Shigar Fort. The Hushe Valley beyond is the approach route for Gondogoro La and K6/K7 base camps.
