Five days in Skardu is the right amount of time. Long enough to see the lakes, Shigar Valley, Khaplu, and Deosai without rushing, short enough that every day has a clear purpose. This is the structure behind our Khwab Retreat (5-day Skardu itinerary), built from how we plan trips for guests who have exactly a week including travel days.
Before you arrive: the one thing most people get wrong
Skardu is served by PIA flights from Islamabad, when the weather cooperates. The Karakoram Range creates its own weather patterns and flights cancel without warning, sometimes for two or three consecutive days. Build at least one buffer day into your overall trip: arrive a day earlier than you need to, or plan your departure day to not be the same as your connecting flight home. The guests whose trips go wrong are almost always the ones who built no buffer.
Day 1: Arrival and the lakes
Land at Skardu airport and get straight into it. After settling into your hotel, drive to Upper Kachura Lake (also called Shangrila Lake): 25 kilometres from Skardu, set in a natural bowl with clear blue-green water and the famous Shangrila Resort on its shore. The late afternoon light on the water is worth arriving in time for. Continue to Lower Kachura Lake on the return, a wilder, quieter lake that most tour groups skip. Back to Skardu for dinner.

Day 2: Shigar Valley
Drive 30 minutes east into Shigar Valley, which opens from a narrow gorge into a wider valley with apricot orchards and ancient fortifications. Shigar Fort is the centrepiece: a 17th-century royal palace, beautifully restored by the Aga Khan Trust. Even if you are not staying here, the museum and gardens are worth an hour. Continue to the Sarfaranga Cold Desert in the afternoon, sand dunes backed by Karakoram snowfields, most dramatic in the late sun. Return to Skardu.
Day 3: Khaplu day trip
Khaplu is 100 kilometres east of Skardu: two hours on mountain roads that get more dramatic with every bend. Allow the full day. Khaplu Palace (a Serena Heritage property, also open for visits if you are not staying) sits above the town with sweeping views up the Shyok Valley. The 700-year-old Chaqchan Mosque in the old bazaar area is one of the finest examples of Central Asian wooden mosque architecture in Pakistan and is still in active use. Lunch in Khaplu town. Drive back in the afternoon, arriving back in Skardu by early evening.
Day 4: Deosai National Park
Leave by 7am. Deosai, the second-highest plateau in the world at 4,114 metres, requires an early start because the 2-hour drive gives afternoon thunderstorms a chance to close the road before you get back. Arrive at the plateau edge and drive through the vast alpine meadows to Sheosar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. Time for a walk around the lake, wildlife watching (Himalayan brown bears are present; marmots are common), and a picnic lunch. Return to Skardu by mid-afternoon.
Note: Deosai is only accessible mid-June to mid-October. If you are travelling outside this window, use Day 4 for Kharpocho Fort and a slow afternoon in Skardu bazaar instead.
Day 5: Kharpocho Fort and departure
A morning visit to Kharpocho Fort, the 16th-century hilltop citadel above Skardu town, gives you the panoramic valley view that ties the whole trip together: the Indus braiding across the flat valley floor, the mountains rising on all sides. The climb from the car park takes about 10 minutes. Allow an hour at the top. Then: Skardu bazaar for last-minute shopping, lunch at a local Balti restaurant, and airport transfer for your afternoon flight.
What this itinerary leaves out, and why
A 5-day itinerary has to make choices. This route leaves out Satpara Lake (worth it on a 7-day trip; on 5 days it is one lake too many), the Buddha Rock petroglyphs near town (an hour slot, adds up), and any overnight in Shigar Valley (which opens up the itinerary significantly, our Aangan Retreat (7-day itinerary) puts three nights at Himmel Skardu in Shigar for guests who want that pace).
What this itinerary includes is the core of Baltistan: the lakes, the heritage valley, the most ambitious day trip, and the one natural wonder (Deosai) that is genuinely difficult to describe to someone who has not seen it.
Practical notes
Transport: You need a private 4x4 for all of this. Khaplu and Deosai on shared transport is theoretically possible but adds significant friction. We use Land Cruiser Prado as standard.
Altitude: Skardu sits at 2,400 metres. Deosai reaches 4,114 metres. Most people feel fine; a small number experience mild headache on the Deosai day. Rest and hydration on Day 1 helps.
Weather flexibility: The most likely disruption is Deosai access. If clouds close the road in the morning, swap Day 4 and Day 3 and try Deosai on the later day.
For the full destination context behind each stop, see the Skardu complete travel guide. The Skardu weather by month guide helps with timing your visit. This itinerary is the structure of our Khwab Retreat: 5 days, private Prado, boutique hotels in Skardu and Shigar. Get in touch with your dates and we will build the full itinerary around your group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for Skardu?
Yes, comfortably. Five days covers Kharpocho Fort, the Kachura Lakes, Shigar Valley, Khaplu as a day trip, and a full Deosai day, the complete core circuit of the Skardu district. A sixth or seventh day adds an overnight in Khaplu and a slower pace throughout. See the 7-day Skardu itinerary if you have more time.
What is the most important day to get right in a 5-day Skardu itinerary?
The Deosai day. Leave Skardu by 7am to reach the plateau before afternoon thunderstorms build, a late start can mean a rushed return or a closed road. Everything else on the itinerary has more flexibility. Deosai rewards early starts more than any other destination in the region, and it is the one day where poor timing genuinely costs you the experience.
What should I prioritise if my Skardu flight is delayed or cancelled?
Build a buffer day specifically for this, it is not optional advice for Skardu. If you lose a day to a cancellation, cut the Khaplu day trip first (most driving, least close to Skardu) and protect Deosai and Shigar Valley. The Skardu flights guide covers cancellation management in full detail.
