August is Skardu's busiest month and, by several measures, its most vivid. The Deosai plateau wildflowers peak in late July and carry into August; the valley is warm; every attraction is fully open; and the Islamabad to Skardu flight runs at its most consistent of the year. If you are travelling in August, you are in peak season, which has real advantages and some trade-offs worth knowing about.
The weather in August
Valley temperatures in August range from 22 to 34°C during the day, dropping to 14 to 18°C at night. It is the warmest month in the Skardu calendar. Midday in the valley is hot; mornings and evenings are comfortable. At altitude, Deosai at 4,114 metres, Kharpocho summit, the upper lake access roads, temperatures are 8 to 12 degrees cooler and a fleece is always useful.
Some afternoon cloud is normal in August. Mountain views are clearest in the morning, plan drives for the first half of the day and use afternoons for activities closer to Skardu city. Rain in the valley is uncommon but possible; Deosai afternoon thunderstorms are a genuine consideration and the main reason to start that day early.

Deosai in August
Deosai National Park in August is fully open and at its most dramatic for wildflowers. The plateau bloom that peaks in late July continues into early August across the 3,000 square kilometre grassland. Sheosar Lake reflects the summer sky. Himalayan brown bears are active. The night sky from the park rest house is among the finest in South Asia.
Leave Skardu by 7am for Deosai in August. The 2-hour drive to the plateau entrance gets you there before the afternoon weather builds. Most groups that have a difficult Deosai day, rushing back, hitting cloud, started after 8am.
The crowds: what they actually mean
August is when Pakistani domestic tourism peaks. The practical effects: Shigar Fort Palace requires booking 3 to 4 weeks ahead. Kharpocho Fort has more people than in shoulder season. The road to the Kachura Lakes is busier. Khaplu Palace fills quickly.
These crowds are manageable. Arrive at Kharpocho Fort before 8am. Drive to Deosai with the earliest possible departure. Stay at least one night in Khaplu to separate yourself from the day-trip circuit. The crowds in Skardu in August are nothing like what you would encounter at comparable European mountain destinations. They are worth planning around, not worth avoiding the month over.
Flights in August
August has the most reliable Islamabad to Skardu flight schedule of the year. Summer weather is typically stable; fog and cloud cancellations are less common than in spring and autumn. This does not mean cancellations do not happen, they do, but your odds of flying on the booked day are highest in July and August. Still build one buffer day at each end. See the Skardu flights guide for how to handle cancellations when they occur.
