August is Hunza Valley's peak month: everything is open, the KKH is at full capacity, the apricot harvest is underway across the terraced orchards, and Attabad Lake's turquoise colour is at its most intense in direct summer light. It is also the month with the most visitors. With the right approach, August is an excellent time to visit, but it requires more planning than shoulder season.
The weather in August
Karimabad in August sits between 24 and 32°C during the day, dropping to 14 to 18°C at night. It is warm and occasionally hot at valley level. Eagle's Nest at 3,200 metres is 8 to 10 degrees cooler. The air is generally clear, though some afternoon cloud builds in the upper valley. The best light, for photography and for views, is the first two hours after sunrise.
The apricot harvest
Hunza's apricots ripen in July and continue into August. The terraced orchards in Karimabad, Altit, and the villages above are heavy with fruit. Roadside stalls sell fresh and dried apricot in bulk. The smell of drying apricots on rooftops, distinctive and specific to this season, is one of the more atmospheric sensory details of a summer visit. August is the last chance to see the active harvest before the orchards clear and the season transitions toward autumn.

Attabad Lake in August
Attabad Lake's turquoise water is most vivid in direct summer light, a chemical function of the glacial minerals suspended in the water catching strong overhead illumination. August midday at Attabad is the most intense colour the lake shows. Boat rides are operating at full capacity. For photographers, the morning or evening light softens the colour toward turquoise-blue rather than harsh aquamarine; both are worth experiencing.
Managing the crowds
August is when Pakistani school holidays produce the year's highest domestic visitor numbers. Baltit Fort in Karimabad has queues from mid-morning. Eagle's Nest at sunrise has the most cars of the year parked at the viewpoint. Attabad Lake's boat rides are the busiest. The standard mitigation: arrive at any viewpoint or historical site before 8am. Spend afternoons in the village lanes and orchards, which receive far fewer people than the main attractions. Eat dinner late, the restaurants empty after 9pm even in August.
