Why Raahi for Families
Families don't travel like couples. Kids have moods. Parents have different interests. Grandparents have different stamina. A shared minibus with a fixed departure and a packed itinerary is the wrong structure for a family trip.
Every Raahi family trip uses a private 4x4: your family and no one else. You stop when someone needs a toilet. You slow down when the kids want to look at something. You have an extra hour at the lake because everyone's having a good time. The vehicle is yours, the schedule is yours.
We've planned trips for families with children as young as three and as old as seventy. The pacing adapts. Deosai at 4,100m is suitable for most adults but worth discussing for young children: altitude acclimatisation matters. We give honest advice about what is and isn't appropriate for your specific group.
Family Highlights
Sand dunes in the mountains. Kids immediately want to run to the top of them. Camels available for those who want the full experience.
Clean, calm, safe for paddleboating. The blue-green water genuinely puzzles children who are used to sea or lake colours they can understand.
A 20-minute climb gets the whole family to a 16th-century fort with 360-degree mountain views. The history lands differently when you're standing inside it.
History made accessible. The palace museum is small and manageable. The garden is safe for young children. Staying here is memorable at any age.
Attabad Lake boat trips, Baltit Fort, the Eagle's Nest viewpoint. Hunza is one of the most accessible and rewarding destinations for mixed-age groups.
Spotting a Himalayan brown bear from the car window is something children talk about for years. Worth the long drive for families with curious kids.
FAQ
Yes. Skardu is one of Pakistan's safest regions. Children are welcomed warmly everywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan. The main safety consideration is altitude: Skardu at 2,400m and Deosai at 4,100m require acclimatisation, especially for young children. We discuss this in the planning conversation.
There is no formal minimum age. We have taken families with toddlers. Very young children and Deosai at 4,100m are worth discussing: altitude affects babies differently from adults. Other parts of the Skardu itinerary are suitable at any age.
Mountain roads are narrow and some are rough. Our drivers are experienced on these specific routes. Land Cruiser Prado provides good ground clearance and stability. Seatbelts are always required. We build rest stops into long drives and pace the itinerary around your family's needs.
The Sarfaranga Cold Desert (sand dunes they can run up), Kachura Lakes (paddleboating and the vivid water colour), Kharpocho Fort (a real fort they can climb), and spotting Himalayan brown bears in Deosai. Most children who visit Skardu ask to come back.
