May sits in a gap that most travel advice ignores: after the apricot blossom and before the July to August peak. It is Hunza's quiet opener, the orchards are in full green leaf, the Karakoram Highway is clear, the Khunjerab Pass is just opening, and the summer crowds have not arrived yet. For travellers who want the valley accessible and unhurried, May is an underrated choice.
The weather in May
Temperatures in Karimabad in May range from 15 to 24°C during the day, dropping to 8 to 14°C at night. It is warm enough to walk comfortably without heat becoming an issue. The air is clear and Rakaposhi is typically sharply visible on most mornings. Some afternoon cloud is possible but rain is uncommon. At higher elevations, Eagle's Nest, the upper valley toward Passu, expect 6 to 8 degrees cooler and carry a fleece.
Blossom is over, what replaces it
The apricot blossom peaks in mid-April and by late April the petals have fallen. By May the trees are in full leaf: a different kind of beautiful, greener and less photographed but equally atmospheric when light catches the orchards on the terraced valley slopes. The apricot fruit is forming but not yet ripe, the harvest season comes later in the summer.

Walnut trees are in full leaf. The village lanes through Altit and above Karimabad have the particular dense green of early mountain summer. It is a quieter visual register than the blossom season, but the valley is genuinely beautiful in this state.
Khunjerab Pass opening
The Khunjerab Pass typically opens around May 1. This means May is the first month of the year when the full KKH drive, Karimabad north through Passu, Gulmit, Sost, and to the pass at 4,693 metres, is possible. For travellers who want to include the pass in a Hunza trip, May is the first opportunity after a winter closure. The drive to the pass and back from Karimabad is a long day, but the high-altitude landscape in early May, often still with snow on surrounding peaks, is striking.
Crowds: significantly lower than summer
May precedes the school holiday surge. Pakistani domestic tourism picks up later in the summer; international visitors tend to cluster in June to September. The practical result: Baltit Fort has no queue, Eagle's Nest has the viewpoint largely to yourself, Attabad Lake boat rides do not need booking in advance. Accommodation in Karimabad is available at short notice. For anyone who finds the July to August Hunza crowd experience discordant, May is when the valley is most itself.
What is not yet available in May
Deosai National Park does not open until mid-June, if Deosai is on your list, plan for June or later. Some high-altitude trekking routes are still snow-covered. A few guesthouses in the upper valley (Passu, Gulmit) may not have reopened for the season in early May. None of these are significant limitations for a standard Hunza Valley trip focused on the forts, viewpoints, and Karakoram landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is May a good time to visit Hunza Valley?
Yes, May is an underrated month in Hunza. The blossom is over but the orchards are in full green leaf, crowds are significantly lower than peak summer, accommodation is easy to book, and the Khunjerab Pass opens around May 1 for the first time since autumn. Temperatures are comfortable (15 to 24°C) without the heat of August. The main limitation: Deosai does not open until mid-June.
What is Hunza like in May compared to April?
April has the apricot blossom, the most photographed event in the Hunza calendar. May has the orchards in full leaf: greener, quieter, and less crowded. If the blossom is your primary reason for visiting, go in April. If you want accessible, uncrowded Hunza with full attractions open and the Khunjerab Pass newly accessible, May is a strong choice.
Does the Khunjerab Pass open in May?
Yes, typically around May 1. The pass opening means the full KKH drive from Karimabad through Passu and Sost to the 4,693-metre border crossing is possible for the first time since the previous autumn. May gives you the high-altitude landscape with snow still on surrounding peaks, a different and striking version of the drive compared to the fully-open summer months.
