Nine centuries of Hunza history on a single bluff. The seat of the Hunza Mirs, restored to extraordinary condition. Ultar Glacier directly behind it. The Hunza valley at your feet.
About the Fort
Baltit Fort has stood above Karimabad for somewhere between 700 and 900 years, depending on which historian you ask. What is certain is that it served as the seat of the Hunza Mirs, the ruling dynasty of the independent Hunza kingdom, until 1945, when the last Mir relocated to a more modern residence below.
The Aga Khan Trust for Culture undertook a meticulous restoration in the 1990s, preserving the original Tibetan-influenced architecture while stabilising the structure and making it accessible. The result won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2004. Inside, original royal apartments, carved wooden ceilings, and artefacts from the Mir's household remain intact and on display.
The fort's position is as important as its history. It sits on a bluff above the old village of Karimabad with the Ultar Glacier rising directly behind it, one of the most dramatic natural backdrops of any historic building in South Asia. From the top terrace, the entire Hunza valley is visible: the Hunza River threading through the gorge, the KKH on the opposite slope, and Rakaposhi (7,788m) to the south.
