Most generic packing lists for Pakistan mountain trips either under-prepare you for the conditions or send you with a bag so heavy you can barely lift it. Here is what you actually need, based on running tours in this region year-round.
Clothing
The key principle for Skardu and Hunza is layering: the temperature can swing from 30C at midday in the valley to 5C at Deosai in the evening of the same day.
- 3 to 4 t-shirts or lightweight long-sleeve shirts: breathable fabric, quick-dry if possible
- 1 to 2 pairs of trekking trousers: convertible zip-off trousers work well. Avoid denim: it is heavy and does not dry
- 1 mid-layer fleece or down jacket: essential for Deosai and morning/evening temperatures throughout the year
- 1 waterproof shell jacket: rain can happen at any time; summer afternoon showers are common in Skardu
- Warm hat and gloves: even in August, Deosai gets cold enough to need these
- Comfortable walking shoes: you do not need full mountaineering boots for a standard Skardu itinerary. Trail shoes or trekking sandals work for most activities. Bring one pair of comfortable town shoes for evenings
On modesty: shoulders and knees covered is respectful and expected. This is easier to manage with lightweight long-sleeve shirts and trousers than with separate modesty layers added on top of shorts and vest tops.
Sun protection
This is consistently under-packed. At altitude, UV intensity is significantly higher than at sea level. Deosai at 4,100 metres will burn unprotected skin quickly even on overcast days.
- SPF 50+ sunscreen: bring more than you think you need
- Sunglasses with UV protection: essential on glaciers and high plateaus
- Sun hat with a brim
- Lip balm with SPF
Health and hygiene
- Personal medication including any prescription drugs (local pharmacies in Skardu are basic)
- Altitude sickness medication: discuss with your doctor; Diamox (acetazolamide) is commonly used
- Oral rehydration sachets
- Diarrhoea treatment: stomach issues happen on any international trip
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
- Toilet paper: not always available at viewpoints and rest stops
Electronics and power
- Universal power adapter: Pakistan uses Type C and Type G sockets
- Power bank: load-shedding is common in Skardu; charge your devices when you can
- Camera with extra batteries: cold temperatures drain batteries quickly at altitude
- Extra memory cards
What you can buy in Skardu
Skardu's main market has most basics: water, snacks, toiletries, basic medication, warm clothing (including down jackets and fleeces, often good quality). You do not need to over-prepare for food and drink: bottled water is widely available. For specialist items (specific medications, premium sun cream, Gore-Tex gear), bring from home.
What to leave at home
- Heavy jeans and multiple pairs of casual shoes: the roads are dusty, luggage gets bumped around, and you rarely need formal clothes
- Full-size toiletries: buy small travel sizes or decant
- More than one book: digital reading is lighter
A carry-on sized bag plus a small day pack is enough for a 7 to 10 day Skardu trip. The roads are rough enough that having less luggage to move in and out of the car is genuinely appreciated by day 3.
