Hunza has more accommodation options than any other destination in Gilgit-Baltistan, and the range is wider than most travellers expect: from a restored 700-year-old fort to simple concrete guesthouses with the best views in the valley. This is our honest assessment of where to stay, based on years of booking guests into these properties.
The heritage option: Baltit Fort (Serena Hotels)
Baltit Fort in Karimabad is the oldest heritage hotel in Hunza. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it and Serena Hotels operates the guest wing. The fort itself was built in the 13th century, though the current structure dates mostly from the 17th century, with subsequent renovations. Rooms look directly out over the terraced fields of the Hunza Valley to Rakaposhi and the surrounding peaks.
It is smaller than Shigar Fort Palace, fewer rooms, a quieter restaurant, which means it often feels more private. For a couple or a small group that wants something genuinely extraordinary, this is the right choice. Rates: roughly PKR 60,000 to 80,000 per night in peak season. Reserve two to three months ahead for April (blossom season) and July to August.

Eagle's Nest: the view that justifies the drive
The Eagle's Nest viewpoint sits at 3,200 metres above Duikar, roughly 20 minutes above Karimabad by road. The guesthouse there is basic, simple rooms, limited hot water, but the panorama is the point: Rakaposhi, Diran, Ultar Sar, and the full sweep of the Hunza Valley in a single frame. Sunrise from here is one of the best experiences in the region.
Stay one night here and one or two nights in Karimabad: you get the view at dawn without the crowds, then come down for the day's sightseeing. It books out faster than you'd expect in peak season given how few rooms exist. Reserve at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for April and summer.
Mid-range hotels in Karimabad
Karimabad has improved substantially over the past few years. Several mid-range properties now offer clean, well-maintained rooms with mountain views at prices well below the heritage options. What to look for: mountain-facing rooms (valley-side, not road-side), a functioning generator for evening power cuts, and proximity to the bazaar if you want to walk rather than drive everywhere.
The best mid-range options are spread along the main road through Karimabad and the lanes climbing toward Baltit Fort. We do not name specific hotels here because quality within a single property can vary significantly by room, and conditions change year to year. When planning your trip, ask us directly, we will give you a current recommendation based on your group size and dates.
Upper Hunza: Gulmit and Passu
For travellers heading to upper Hunza, Passu Cones, Shimshal Valley, or Khunjerab Pass, Gulmit and Passu have simple guesthouses that work well as a one-night base. They are not comfortable in the conventional sense: facilities are minimal, heating is inconsistent in shoulder season, and hot water is unreliable. But staying in Gulmit rather than returning to Karimabad each day saves two hours of driving and gives you the upper valley at dusk and dawn, which is when the light on the cones is at its best.
Along the Attabad Lake shore
Several guesthouses and small hotels sit along the Attabad Lake shoreline. They are aimed at the domestic tourism market and are inexpensive. Views directly over the turquoise lake are the main draw. They are better as a lunch stop or half-day detour than as a base, though one night there works if you want a specific sunrise or sunset shot over the water.
What books out first
Baltit Fort and Eagle's Nest guesthouse both have limited room counts and fill fast. April (blossom season) and July to August are the hardest months to find availability at either. If your itinerary depends on either property, book them before you book flights. The mid-range Karimabad hotels have more inventory and hold availability longer, but still fill by mid-June for peak summer.
Our honest recommendation
If the budget allows one night at Baltit Fort, take it, the combination of heritage, location, and views is hard to match anywhere in Pakistan. If budget is tighter, a good mid-range hotel in Karimabad plus one night at Eagle's Nest gives you the essential Hunza accommodation experience at a fraction of the cost.
Raahi includes hotel selection as part of every trip we plan. Our Do Wadiyan (9 days) and Sukoon Retreat (5 days) both include Hunza with hotels pre-selected and booked. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best hotel in Hunza Valley?
For views and heritage, Hunza Serena Hotel sits above Karimabad with panoramic views of Rakaposhi and the valley, a well-run property at the top of the mid-range bracket. For smaller and more boutique, several guesthouses in the old village lane above Baltit Fort offer a more intimate experience with fort views. Get in touch with your dates and preferences and we will recommend the right fit for your budget and group.
Is there budget accommodation in Hunza Valley?
Yes. Karimabad has guesthouses from around PKR 5,000 to 20,000 per night, most including breakfast. Quality varies considerably, some are excellent value, others disappoint. The lanes above the main bazaar have several well-run budget options. For any property above PKR 15,000 per night, confirm hot water and heating before booking, especially outside peak season.
When should I book hotels in Hunza Valley?
For April (blossom season) and July to August (peak summer), book 3 to 6 weeks in advance, the better properties fill quickly. June, September, and October can usually be arranged with 1 to 2 weeks' notice. All Raahi tours include accommodation arrangements end-to-end; contact us with your dates and we handle bookings across the full itinerary.
