3,200 metres above Duikar village. Four 7,000-metre peaks. The whole of Hunza spread below you. Arrive before sunrise, you will not regret it.
About the Viewpoint
The road to Eagle's Nest climbs from Karimabad through apricot orchards and then switchbacks up a steep ridge above the village of Duikar. At 3,200 metres, it emerges onto a narrow crest where the valley suddenly appears in full below you, the Hunza River winding south, Baltit Fort sitting on its rocky promontory above Karimabad, and the orchards that give Hunza its colour in spring and autumn.
Above all of that: Rakaposhi at 7,788 metres, one of the most striking peaks in the Karakoram because of its massive southern face rising almost unbroken from the valley floor. Beside it, Ultar Sar at 7,388 metres and Diran at 7,266 metres. On clear mornings these peaks are lit from below by the rising sun while the valley is still in shadow, the alpenglow effect that makes this the most-photographed viewpoint in Hunza.
The Eagle's Nest Hotel is located at the same ridge and has a few rooms and a restaurant, staying overnight and watching the sunrise without the drive up in the dark is the best way to do it. Day visits are also excellent, particularly for sunset.
