A month-by-month guide from the people who live here year-round. Honest advice, no marketing spin.
The Quick Answer
September is our top recommendation.
For most travellers, September gives the best combination of weather (warm days, cool nights), crowd levels (significantly fewer than July-August), road access (Deosai still open), and natural beauty (harvest colours, autumn light). October is equally good but Deosai closes mid-month depending on snow.

Practical Advice
Mountain weather can cancel flights to Skardu at any time of year. Summer months have fewer cancellations than spring. Our advice: always build one extra day into your schedule at both ends of the trip. If your flight cancels, you have time to re-book or road it without losing the whole itinerary.
Yes: late September. The summer crowds have thinned, the temperature is perfect (20°C days, 10°C nights), Deosai is still open, and the autumn colour in Shigar's poplar groves begins around the last week of September. This is the window we recommend most actively to guests who have flexibility.
Shigar Fort Palace fills up weeks in advance in July and August: book 4-6 weeks ahead minimum. Khaplu Palace is less pressured. Skardu city hotels have more inventory and fill closer to the date. For peak season (July-August) travel, we recommend confirming hotels 6-8 weeks before departure.
Common Questions
September and October are the best time to visit Skardu: perfect temperatures, fewer crowds, autumn harvest colours, and all roads including Deosai still open. June-August (peak summer) is the most popular but busier and hotter. Avoid November-March unless you're comfortable with cold and limited access.
For the famous apricot blossoms, visit Hunza in mid-to-late April. For warm weather and full access, June-August is peak season. September-October offers perfect weather with fewer tourists. Hunza is also accessible in winter, unlike Deosai.
Deosai is typically accessible from June to mid-October, depending on the year's snowfall. The wildflower peak is July-August. The road is snowbound from November through May.
Skardu by Month
April
5 to 20°C
Hunza apricot blossom peaks mid-to-late April. Skardu is cold and transitional: lower valleys beginning to green, but Deosai completely closed and mountain roads uncertain. Good for Hunza, limited for Skardu.
May
10 to 25°C
Skardu's valley floors warm up. The Shigar Valley and Kachura Lakes are accessible. Deosai road usually still closed until late May or early June. Good time for the forts and lakes; not yet for Deosai.
June
15 to 28°C
Deosai opens, typically mid-June. All major attractions fully accessible. Tourist numbers begin rising but have not yet peaked. Excellent choice: full access, pleasant temperatures, and fewer visitors than July-August.
July
18 to 33°C
Peak season. Deosai wildflowers at their best. Brown bear sightings most frequent. Hottest month in Skardu city. Book hotels 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Busiest roads and most crowded attractions, but full access and maximum daylight.
August
17 to 32°C
Similar to July: peak season, peak crowds, peak heat in Skardu city. Wildflowers slightly past their best by late August. Still excellent overall. Deosai fully open. A strong choice if July is full or flights are cheaper.
September
10 to 25°C
Our top recommendation. Tourist numbers drop sharply after mid-August. Temperatures are perfect: warm days, cool nights. Deosai still open until mid-October in most years. Harvest season underway: apricots drying on rooftops, walnuts ripening. Autumn colour beginning in Shigar.
October
5 to 20°C
Autumn colour peaks in Shigar and Khaplu's poplar groves. Deosai usually closes mid-October with the first heavy snowfall: time your visit before then. Lower tourist numbers, excellent photography light, cool but comfortable daytime temperatures.
